The man arrested over a hit and run which killed one teenager and left another fighting for life has been released from custody without charge.
The 33-year-old man was arrested at his Hillside home on Thursday, two days after teenagers Jasmine Vuong and Anthony Nguyen were hit by an SUV while crossing the intersection of Taylors and Braeswood roads in Delahey.
The friends, both aged 17, had just stepped onto the road crossing on a green pedestrian light, when a SUV allegedly ran a red light.
Anthony, who suffered severe head injuries, died in the intensive care unit at the Royal Melbourne Hospital on Wednesday evening.
Jasmine remains in a critical condition in the same hospital on Friday afternoon. She has undergone surgery for a fractured skull. The 17-year-old is also suffering multiple broken bones, including a broken arm and a broken hip.
Police interviewed the Hillside man on Friday, but he was released about midday.
“The man was released … without charge pending further forensic examination of a vehicle and other forensic testing,” police spokeswoman Belinda Batty said.
Police determined that the pieces of the headlight recovered at the scene belonged to a light-coloured Nissan Dualis SUV, manufactured between October 2007 and January 2010.
A car matching that description was found at the man’s house on Thursday.
“The investigation is ongoing,” Ms Batty said.
