Keilor residents say a proposed landfill on Annandale Road would be “disastrous”, while Brimbank council is planning to lodge an objection with neighbouring Hume council to the same proposal.
Developer Calleja Properties submitted an application with Hume council late last year for permission to put a maximum of 250,000 cubic metres of soil on its former landfill at 145 Annandale Road, Keilor.
A report presented at Brimbank council’s final 2014 meeting said the soil would raise the area’s ground level by up to 17 metres. The report recommended Brimbank council lodge an objection with Hume council.
Keilor Residents and Ratepayers Association spokeswoman Susan Jennison said the most “frightening” thing about the proposal was its potential “permanent impact” on Keilor valley.
“What’s being altered most obviously here is the skyline, but it’s not just a change to appearance; it’s all those other things that go with it,” she said.
“It’ll create dust for residents and more traffic. It will alter the whole essence of the area.”
So far, there have been 23 objections to the planning permit, which is scheduled to be considered at Hume council’s February 23 meeting.
Calleja Properties could not be contacted before the Star Weekly’s deadline.
