Caroline Springs: Slain student Sobin Sebastian remains enigma

Homicide detectives need information about a student from India who was “ferociously” killed in Caroline Springs last year.

Police say suspected drug dealer Sobin Sebastian, who used the alias Tre Simmonds, was brutally bashed at his house in the early hours of October 11.

Three men, including a life member of the Bros outlaw motorcycle gang, have been charged over the Indian national’s death.

Details of Mr Sebastian’s background are scant and he was not known to police at the time of his death.

“It did take quite some time for us to identify him. We really have limited details about his history here,” Detective Acting Inspector Stuart Bailey said.

Mr Sebastian arrived in Australia from India on a student visa in 2009, and Acting Inspector Bailey said investigators were keen to speak to anyone with information about his movements and interests in Victoria.

“We know his family is from Kerala in India … and that he doesn’t have any relatives in Australia.”

Acting Inspector Bailey said Mr Sebastian was suspected of being involved in drug trafficking.

“We have information to suggest that at the time of his death he was involved in drug activity. Anyone who [is] willing to assist us in this regard [can] come forward anonymously,” he said.

Mr Sebastian had a shaved head and was heavily tattooed on his arms and upper body. Police believe he often wore hip-hop-style or basketball clothes.

Mr Sebastian is understood to have lived in Greensborough and at boarding houses in Preston and Coburg.

“I urge anyone with information about Sobin’s background, the addresses he may have attended, friends and/or associates or places of employment to contact police,” Acting Inspector Bailey said.

Brothers Peter Dimitrovski, 28, and Robert Dimitrovski, 21, and Bros bikie gang member John Pearce, 66, are due for a committal mention in the Melbourne Magistrates Court next month in relation to the killing.
