UPDATE: Labor candidate for St Albans Natalie Suleyman, in her victory speech on Saturday night, vowed to make the Main Road level crossing removal a priority.
Speaking at her election party at the Maltese Folklore Club in St Albans, Ms Suleyman said she would request a briefing from VicRoads on Monday morning to get work on the main Road level crossing removal up and running.
Figures from the Victorian Electoral Commission show Ms Suleyman has gained 57 per cent of the primary vote and is ahead 66.26 per cent to Liberal’s candidate Moira Deeming on a two-party preferred vote.
A total 41 per cent of the vote has been counted so far.
Meanwhile, 30 per cent of pre-poll votes won’t be counted until Sunday.
Ms Suleyman said she was thankful fro the community’s support throughout her campaign and would also push for the removal of the Furlong Road level crossing and the development of a $200 million women and children’s hospital on the Sunshine Hospital site.
“It’s been a tough journey, and the people of St Albans have responded overwhelmingly by voting for me,” she said.
“We’ve had a fantastic result this evening.”
