Fashion-savvy students across the west will get the chance to showcase their designs on the catwalk during the Melbourne Fashion Festival as applications open for the 2015 Future Runway competition.
Festival organisers are calling on secondary school students 16 and older to tap into their inner designer, submit a creative journal detailing the concept and overall style of their signature collection, and provide evidence of their sewing experience.
Successful applicants will showcase their collections to industry professionals, the media and consumers in a full-scale runway show during March’s festival.
Melbourne festival chief executive Graeme Lewsey says the competition aims to discover and nurture young designers’ talents.
“We’re excited to be gathering promising young talent from around Australia and helping transform their unique visions to reality,” Mr Lewsey said.
Finalists will receive a Spotlight mentorship to help hone their technical and design skills.
Retailer Spotlight will also award the winning school six Bernina sewing machines to support ongoing sewing education.
Applications opened just a month after the annual Fashion Awards Australia gala was held at the Lakeside Banquet and Convention Centre in Taylors Lakes.
This year’s gala featured almost 300 entries from years 9 to 12, TAFE students and new and emerging designers, including designs by students from St Albans Secondary College.
