A Tullamarine man has been charged over the deaths of a man and a woman more than a year after they perished in a Deer Park fire.
The 44-year-old will appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday after detectives from the arson and explosives squad charged him with two counts of arson causing death.
The blaze on August 20 last year resulted in the death of Steve White, 44, and a woman believed to be his partner.
Two men also staying at the public housing unit in Deer Street were hospitalised suffering cuts and smoke inhalation.
A police media representative said she was unable to release the name of the woman who died in the fire, as it was now a “court matter”.
At the time investigators said they were baffled why the pair weren’t able to escape, as they had assisted the two other occupants out of the premises.
The deceased pair was known to police and the house had been the scene of a siege in December 2011.
