Almost a quarter of a century of trade will come to an end this month when a Keilor East hardware store shuts up shop.
Joe Molluso’s J&D Hardware in McFarlane Street has been part of Keilor East for generations, but an interest in the locksmith trade has prompted Joe to make a career change.
“I’ve been in hardware most of my life, but an opportunity came knocking on my door,” Mr Molluso said.
The 47-year-old Taylors Lakes’ resident, has put the business up for sale so he can start work as a travelling locksmith.
He said “big box” retailers such as Bunnings, and Masters had changed the hardware industry. But he said while the ‘giants’ provided oodles of choice; old-fashioned service, honesty and knowledge gave independent stores like his an edge.
“Business isn’t what it used to be. I’m only a handyman store.
“I have no room for timber, or storage for the range they offer, but we kill them on service,” Mr Molluso said.
By all accounts, his customers agree.
“It seems [the hardware shop] to be as much a part of their lives as it is mine,” he said. “They’re actually getting emotional.”
