Deer Park’s Kayla Adams: A diamond in the rough

This baseball all-rounder is hitting home runs.

Deer Park’s Kayla Adams topped a stellar season on the pitch when she was chosen to represent Canberra in the national baseball titles.

The 15-year-old, who plays for Sunshine Baseball Club, will also head to Queensland later this month as part of the New South Wales country team.

Kayla received a $500 ‘local sporting champions grant’ to help cover costs of the competition. The grant, funded by the federal government, helps successful sports stars aged 12 to 18 with the costs of travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment associated with their chosen competition.

“It [the grant] will help me get to different tournaments and buy new gear,” Kayla said.

Her coach Glenn Letts describes her as an all-rounder who’s enthusiastic and determined.

“She’s always been in a male-dominated team, but she’s always been an outstanding player,” Letts said.

“You can pretty much put her anywhere on the pitch.”

Despite her talents, Kayla hasn’t been able to represent her home state in the game she loves because there aren’t enough female baseball players to field a Victorian team. “It’s nice that people sought her out, but it’s a shame she can’t represent her own state,” mum Jo said.

Applications for the next round of local sporting champions grants are open.
