Sunshine: Thieves opt for smash and grab in crime spree

At least 35 cars had windows smashed and contents stolen during a crime spree in Sunshine last week.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the thefts from vehicles in Una, High, Omega, Chapman, Matthews and Duke streets and Cornwall Road last Monday between 4am and 6am.

Brimbank division’s Inspector Kerin Moloney said that in each case either the driver-side or passenger-side window had been smashed and any valuables in the car seized.

All the vehicles were parked on the street.

“What’s been stolen from them includes small change, purses, handbags and electronic equipment,” Inspector Moloney said.

“We need to remind the community that they need to be vigilant about leaving stuff in their motor vehicles, even if they’re locked.

“I will say on this occasion that there were gloveboxes ransacked, and that type of thing, so it was not necessarily because anything was visible. It just appears to be random … any one car window could cost up to $350 to replace,
so on many of these occasions the property stolen – if there has been property stolen – is much less than the cost of fixing the car.”

Inspector Moloney said the attack was unusual for the area, with Brimbank having recorded an 8 per cent decrease in theft from motor vehicles since this time last year.

He said it was likely there were multiple offenders.

Investigators are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area.
