STEPtember: Do the hard yards for cerebral palsy victims

Here’s a chance for Victorians to step out of their slumber, step up to a challenge, and put their foot down for a worthy cause.

While most office workers take about 3000 steps a day, take up the challenge to do 10,000. Sounds tough? Sure, but if you remember that it’s all for fun and also for a good cause, you will discover a spring in your steps that will help you reach your goal.

Sign up for STEPtember and help Cerebral Palsy Alliance, a not-for-profit organisation that provides services to people with cerebral palsy and their families.

Alliance spokeswoman Jennifer Durante (Hockey) says Steptember is a fun way to become more active and raise much-needed funds for the organisation,

She says participants can get a team of four together and register online to begin their journey. It is open to all Australians.

From September 3, the participants can track their daily step count on their pedometer (which is provided) and record the steps via the website or their smartphone.

‘‘The aim is for each team member to take 10,000 steps every day for 28 days during September.

‘‘That’s the equivalent of virtually climbing the highest peak on every continent.

‘‘People make every step count by asking friends, colleagues and family members to sponsor them by making an online donation or people could even hold their own mini fund-raiser.

‘‘Walking isn’t the only way to reach your daily step count. You can run, cycle, swim or even dance your way to glory. There are over 40 different activities you can convert to steps including activities for people with a disability.’’
