Options for the future use of Brimbank council’s municipal building in Keilor will be revealed early next year.
With the new Brimbank Community and Civic Centre expected to open in Sunshine in June 2016 – incorporating council staff now working in Keilor – the council will work with a consultative committee to prepare a plan.
Community well-being director Neil Whiteside said a draft would go on public display early next year.
The council received plenty of community feedback after setting up consultation marquees in Keilor Village in early May. They drew nearly 200 people.
Council has also met with about 150 people from various fields including service providers, disability support workers, Keilor Village traders and community groups.
“We have gained some valuable community input,” Mr Whiteside said. “The council will now work with the consultative committee
to develop a service plan … that will outline what services and activities could be provided from the building, before a draft plan is developed.
“There will be further opportunities for the community to be involved in the consultation process.”
As reported by this newspaper in April, council chairman John Watson said he was confident that the building would remain in community hands.
“We’re not planning to sell,” he said. “The community has made it clear they want a community hub in Keilor.”
The council is also involved in discussions about the site of the existing Sunshine council building, which is half owned by VicTrack.
Construction of the new Sunshine centre is expected to begin mid-September.
