Tax driver just misses train after driving around boom gates

Sunshine police are appealing for witnesses following reports a taxi driver drove around lowered boom gates, narrowly missing a freight train at a rail level crossing in March.

Police have been told the taxi was travelling south-bound on Anderson Road and came to a stop at the level crossing on Friday, March 7 about 9.50pm.

After waiting at the boom gates, the taxi is reported to have driven around the lowered boom gates and performed a u-turn before heading back north on Anderson Road.

A 1.2km-long freight train travelling 90km/h was passing through the intersection at the time and it is believed came within one-to-two metres of colliding with the taxi.

The train drivers were so alarmed by the near miss they immediately reported the incident to their control room.

Police have spoken with the driver of the taxi, however they are appealing for the male passenger, who was picked up from Melbourne airport heading to Sunshine West, to make contact with police.

Investigators would also like to speak with motorists who were near the level crossing at the time and who may have witnessed the near miss.
