A drunk driver aged in his 80s drove several kilometres with the front wheel of his car scraping and sparking along the road after a crash in Taylors Lakes on Saturday night.
Police communications were inundated with callers after the man struck a traffic signal pole as he turned from the Calder Highway onto Kings Road around 6.30pm.
The Taylors Lakes man continued driving after the accident with the front wheel buckled up underneath the car and at a right angle to his vehicle.
Brimbank Highway Patrol members stopped the man in Parmelia Drive. He told police he wasn’t aware that he had been involved in a crash.
He also told police that he had been drinking with friends in Gisborne and was driving home when stopped.
An evidentiary breath test resulted in a reading of 0.121%.
The man was issued with a penalty notice for $641 which also carries a loss of license for 12 months.
