A Braybrook retailer has been hit with a $2000 fine for supplying toys over a two-year period that could potentially choke small children.
Brighton-based Red Hot Spot Pty Ltd and its director Jiabin Zhang admitted supplying sunglasses and toys that breached Australian product safety standards.
Consumer Affairs Victoria inspectors seized products from the company’s Braybrook and Bentleigh premises in late August last year, including 286 assorted sunglasses and 26 “learning fun puzzle cars”.
Tests on samples revealed that sunglasses did not have the required labels, markings or information identifying the supplier, lens category number and description. The toy cars had small parts that could break off and choke a child.
Mr Zhang acknowledged that the company had breached the Australian Consumer Law by supplying the items between January 2011 and August 27last year. He also personally acknowledged that he was involved in the company’s contraventions.
Mr Zhang told the director of Consumer Affairs Victoria that the company would pay refunds to anybody who returned the goods and pay a $2000 fine.
