Hundreds of residents staged a peaceful protest outside Melton council chambers in a bid to baulk plans to expand a Ravenhall landfill.
About 250 people from Melton, Brimbank and Wyndham urged decision-makers to vote against Boral’s application to extend its operations by 179 million cubic metres.
If approved, it would create one of the largest rubbish dumps in Australia. Children played on the grass last Tuesday night as adults rallied. Melton police’s Inspector Stephen Mutton said the crowd was well behaved.
“When you’ve got this many people out here at 6pm, straight after a full day’s work, you know it’s a significant community issue,” Inspector Mutton said. “It’s a lot of families standing up for something that affects them all.”
The application is due to come before the council on May 27.
