Caroline Springs landfill inaction frustrates residents

Residents living near a Caroline Springs landfill believe not enough is being done to stop rubbish escaping the facility.

They say rubbish has ended up outside the Boral landfill on Riding Boundary Road at least 10 times since March.

Rubbish has been found up to two kilometres away.

The landfill is south of Caroline Springs and Burnside.

Community liaison committee member Eyal Cohen said the most recent trail of rubbish was found on October 1. He said Boral management needed to invest in a windproof transfer station.

“The landfill continues the practice of allowing rubbish tipped from trucks to literally hit the fan regardless of the wind speed,” he said.

Boral business development manager Nick Stuhlener said severe winds had caused the litter to escape. “Boral has a 12-metre-high, heavy-duty litter fence at the southern perimeter,” he said. “A section of fence was removed as repairs were being undertaken due to damage sustained in August.”
