Cuts to TAFE funding are back in the spotlight following the launch on Monday of a ‘Rescue TAFE in the West’ survey.
The Greens are inviting present and prospective Victoria University TAFE students to share the impact on their lives of the state government’s funding cuts of about $300 million.
Western suburbs Greens MP Colleen Hartland said the survey sought to lift the lid on financial stress and poverty.
“The best way to reduce disadvantage and end cycles of poverty is education. This is of great importance in the western suburbs where levels of socio-economic disadvantage can be high.”
Victoria University has had $40 million cut from its annual budget, forcing higher fees, cuts to financial support services and the slashing of almost 80 courses and hundreds of staff.
