Sunny side up for eager students

STATE Education Minister Martin Dixon (centre) has launched a program in Braybrook to open new learning pathways for disadvantaged young people.

Melbourne Academy’s Print Side Up screen printing program, run by Melbourne Citymission, opened last Wednesday.

The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning program will give more than 20 students aged 15 to 25, an individualised education plan and teach them skills including designing custom-made T-shirts and hoodies.

Mr Dixon said the program would open the door to apprenticeships and the chance to continue to a mainstream school or TAFE.

“For some students, mainstream schooling just doesn’t fit their needs. Community VCAL programs, such as Print Side Up, are excellent alternatives that can keep students engaged in their education.’’

The program is a partnership of Citymission and Kensington Community High School.
