Jean Algie was the toast of the town last week turning 101.

The Sydenham resident celebrated with friends and family at Arcare aged care last Thursday and said she was thrilled by all the love and support.

Ms Algie migrated from Scotland to Australia in 1959 with her husband and three children.

“We had nothing,” she said.

“It was challenging, but that’s life, you just keep getting on with it. I’ve always worked and I’ve always seen the fun in things. I love talking and having a laugh.”

Ms Algie worked as a house cleaner in Toorak into her 80’s and many of her former employers still keep in contact today.

These days, her main source of happiness lies in receiving phone calls and visits from her children and grandchildren.

Although not as steady on her feet as she once was, Ms Algie finds joy in the lighter side of life.

“You have to laugh, you have to have fun and you have to take things as they come.”

These days she’s a proud grandmother of five and a great grandmother of five.”
