IN FOCUS: KND Denture brings back your smile

The three prosthetists at KND Denture Clinic – Kathy, Sam and Nick – bring a combined 40-plus years’ experience to their patients and have all the answers to common questions asked by people considering having dentures fitted.

Sam Robertson, co-owner of KND Denture Clinic, says there are several aspects to take into account and consider before making dentures.

Here’s what Sam suggests for prospective denture wearers:

Who needs dentures?

Dentures can replace one tooth, multiple or all teeth in the mouth. Dentures can be made for anybody wanting to change their smile.

What are “immediate dentures”?

An immediate denture is a complete or partial denture inserted on the same day, immediately following the removal of natural teeth.

Can you use normal toothpaste?

Some toothpastes are abrasive and the patients can create micro-scratches on the denture. There are denture toothpastes on the market that have a smoother consistency. Warm, soapy water also works well. It is also important to use a denture brush with soft bristles as these are specifically designed to help clean
dentures best.

What are potential problems of poor-fitting dentures?

As we age our gums change and they shrink, thus making dentures over time feel loose and ill-fitting. Ill-fitting dentures cause sore spots and may damage the tissue in the mouth and natural teeth. Relining (re-fitting) the dentures may fix the problem, or at times, new dentures may be recommended.

Can I sleep with dentures in?

Yes, dentures can be worn at night but removal is preferred because this will give the gums and bone a chance to relax from the pressure of the denture during the day. If patients prefer to sleep with them in, good oral hygiene is important, so brushing natural teeth and cleaning the dentures before going to bed is recommended.

What are implant dentures?

A great alternative to conventional dentures, implant dentures allow the dentures to be held in place with the use of the implants. Movement is drastically reduced and the comfort level and stability increased.

If you have other questions, give one of the team at KND a call because they really will have all the answers.
