Through a lens, family violence exposed

Issues of family violence and children in detention will be explored at a CATC Design School photography exhibition.

Keilor graphic designer Danielle Azzopardi, 24, will present a series of photographs featuring unnamed victims of domestic violence as part of a group exhibition called Sonder.

Azzopardi said her photos captured the body language of the victims, suggesting a loss of identity.

“The images are blurred, so people can relate to them and see that they could be anybody around you,” she said.

Another piece in the exhibition examines the lives of refugee children held in detention centres.

Azzopardi enrolled in the photography diploma in order to complement her day job as a graphic designer.

But she soon found that photography enabled her to explore important social issues.

“The aim of my piece is to give these people a voice,” she said.

Sonder is at the Melbourne Arts Club, 1/176 High Street, Preston until December 10. Tuesday-Friday 11am-4pm and weekends noon-5pm.
