As many as 1500 people will ‘break the fast’, ending the holy month of Ramadan, at the Sunshine mosque next month.
Secretary of the Cyprus Turkish Islamic Community Yusuf Mustafa said the Ballarat Road mosque expects to host Muslims from across Melbourne’s western suburbs to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the festival of breaking the fast.
Eid al-Fitr is one of the Muslim world’s most important religious holidays, and the mosque will offer guests Turkish tea, bread rolls and traditional haloumi cheese from northern Cyprus.
Mr Mustafa said Eid is a time traditionally spent with family.
“It is a three-day celebration where the younger generation visits their elders and other family members,” he said.
Lollies are also an Eid staple, and there will be plenty on offer at the Eid festival on Sunday, July 17, between 10am and 4pm.
