Setting Sun selection for Sunshine film-makers

Sunshine filmmakers will be among the finalists when the west’s premier film festival returns this week with a flood of screenings and events.

This year’s Setting Sun Film Festival attracted 60 entries, creating plenty of work for festival director Anna Bourozikas as she tackled the task of whittling them down to the finalists.

Sunshine’s Andrew Formosa and Natalie Cunningham were two of the filmmakers to make the cut.

Ms Bourozikas says short films by experienced indie filmmakers and emerging local talent will be screened over four days at the Sun Theatre in Yarraville. There will be a Kids’ Day at Footscray Town Hall.

“The entries are incredibly diverse – from sci-fi to a period drama, quality documentaries to animation,” Ms Bourozikas said. “And of course, there’s plenty of the quirky comedy Setting Sun-goers expect from their festival.”

The festival, which began in 2013, attracts entries from local filmmakers and from farther afield.

Several of the short-listed films have made a splash at other festivals, while others will enjoy their big-screen debut at Yarraville.

An opening night event is on Thursday, April 14, and the festival will include a women’s program. Sunday night’s screening will be followed by a presentation of the Sunnies, with prizes valued at up to $5000 on offer for the festival’s best films.

Maribyrnong mayor Cameron McDonald said the council looked forward to hosting Kids’ Day at the town hall as part of its Festival City events.
