My Old Dutch keeps rock and roll alive

Two Sunshine musicians are making magic by combining 1950s rock ’n’ roll with a lowdown, dirty edge. Two-man outfit My Old Dutch is Dave Gogerly on guitar and vocals and Kristian Popczyk on drums.

They recently released their single Queen of the Dogs on iTunes. The track features vocals from Cat Deller of the Burlesque Dolls. They filmed the music video at the Sunshine Motor Inn on Ballarat Road and at Polly, a bar in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy.

The Sunshine boys had crossed paths many times before teaming up in My Old Dutch. Both attended St John’s College, now Caroline Chisholm Catholic College, but were a few years apart. Their grandfathers helped build a Polish community hall in Ardeer in the 1950s.

It was a chance meeting years down the track that led to the formation of My Old Dutch. After both of their previous bands called it quits, Dave asked Kristian to play drums for a recording project.

They soon knew their musical dynamic was too good to let it end there. With a shared, unwavering love for rock ’n’ roll, the pair decided to record the project’s songs as a full- length album and started performing live as My Old Dutch.

“We got together and it was sort of meant to be; all these little things started to click,” Popczyk said.

The pair have since rocked out at revered Melbourne venues such as Reverence in Footscray and the Retreat in Brunswick, and they performed a few gigs in Sydney last year.

Their debut album is slated for an October release through The A&R Department and Shock Records.
