The Western Region Women’s Refuge may have to close because of lack of money. The axing of the Australian Assistance Plan has left the group’s future uncertain.

September 17, 1986

A Sunshine councillor has called for a probe into the records of the Killeen Street childcare centre, which owes the Taxation Office about $28,000 in unpaid taxes and penalties. Cr Don McKay told last week’s council meeting that it was “not good enough” for the debt to be accumulating at the rate of $10 a day.

September 18, 1996

Sunshine firefighters have threatened not to attend fires on vacant land along the southern and western borders of the Westend Market in McIntyre Road, Sunshine. The move follows the recent discovery of three types of exposed asbestos on the site and claims by an environmental scientist that the area is hazardous to the community.

Children in Sunshine North are performing better than their neighbouring counterparts and above the national average, Australian Early Development Index results show. Results released last week by The Smith Family provide a snapshot of the development of 420 five-year-olds in the Brimbank suburbs of Ardeer, Sunshine, Sunshine North and Sunshine West.
