July 28, 1976

Public opposition is erupting against state government proposals to transfer the Newmarket saleyards to Derrimut. A public meeting of the Western Region Environment Centre last week formed a Sunshine Action Committee to co-ordinate resident action against the stockyards.

July 30, 1986

The state government has confirmed its pledge to spend $10-$15 million over the next five years to build a series of education institutes in the west. In parliament last week Premier John Cain, replying to a question from the member for Derrimut, David Cunningham, said the government will be building campus core sites in St Albans, Melton, Werribee and Sydenham. …

July 31, 1996

Conflicting eye witness evidence gave a dramatic start to the committal hearing this week of a 16-year-old girl charged with murder. Two eyewitnesses said they saw Maidstone man Michael Sheeran, 19, killed on February 2 at Footscray Terrace in Gordon Street. But they disputed exactly where Sheeran was stabbed and who was in the area at the time.

A blazing row over depraved video material erupted late last week between Brimbank mayor Natalie Suleyman and the Sunshine Residents and Ratepayers Association. Cr Suleyman said she was the target of a visual clip displayed on the SunRAA website last Wednesday showing a female kicking one of two semi-naked males in the groin.
