40 years ago

August 25, 1976

Private negotiations are under way between several Labor and Independent councillors to determine Sunshine’s new mayor. The present mayor Ian Mill’s term concludes this Saturday.

August 27, 1986

A few pertinent questions asked by Sunshine councillor Don McKay have saved ratepayers $311.80. On the agenda for last week’s council meeting was a recommendation by the Town Clerk, Graeme Pearson, that the council approve payment of $467.70 to Budget Rent-A-Car. Cr McKay said after the meeting if he had not “stirred it up” there was no doubt the full hire car bill would have been paid by the council.

Pensioners and the unemployed in the western suburbs will be forced to wait up to six years for dental treatment – including dentures – as a result of proposals in last week’s federal budget. The government’s decision to scrap the public dental service could see the waiting list for non-urgent cases stretch out from the present two to almost six years.

Mothers of school-age children have formed their own lobby group to demand an early commitment by Brimbank council to a stage two redevelopment of the Sunshine Swim and Leisure Centre. More than 100 women, their numbers swelled by men active in the swimming pool movement and by children, filled Sunshine’s Mariana Hall in Monash Street for a meeting on Thursday.
