Local Government Minister Alan Hunt hinted last week that some action may be taken against present and former Sunshine councillors over the Board of Inquiry report into the city’s finances. The minister admitted there were some actions “yet to take place” when he was questioned on the value of a $330,000 inquiry, which made serious allegations but recommended no action.

Sunshine and the surrounding areas are to become the biggest garbage dump in Australia, according to the Environment Centre of the Western Suburbs. ECOWS spokesman Alan Finch said that Sunshine Council wants to lease an area of land near Jones Road and Kororoit Creek, which is twice the size of the current Hulett Street tip.

Houses are cracking and pictures and ornaments are falling from walls as a direct result of blasting at the Barro Quarry in Kealba, angry residents have claimed. At a fiery meeting at the Kealba Community Centre last Thursday, more than 30 residents said the blasting had seriously damaged their homes and scared their children.

Police have arrested more than 100 people for trafficking heroin in the cities of Brimbank, Maribyrnong, Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Moonee Valley and Moreland. For the past two months, Operation Modern has concentrated on street-level activities. At this stage, 36 offenders have been charged with 150 counts of trafficking heroin.
