Considering council?

People considering standing for council in October can attend a free information session at Brimbank Community and Civic Centre on August 8 from 7pm. The Municipal Association of Victoria session will cover the role and purpose of local government, and outline a councillor’s role, responsibilities and expectations.

Money matters for women

Two free, financial coaching programs tailored for women are set for Brimbank next month. Good Shepherd’s Let’s Talk About Money will be held on August 9, 16, 23 and 30 and September 6 at Hillside Community Centre, and on August 22 and 25 and September 5 and 12 at Westvale Community Centre. It’s part of a Firmer Foundations initiative to support women aged 18 and more to build their financial knowledge and independence.

Jones Creek plant-out

Community help is needed to plant native grasses on a steep section of Jones Creek on August 13 from 10am. Old tree guards and stakes also need to be recovered. Bring water, hats, sturdy shoes and sunscreen. Meet at 639 Ballarat Road, Albion.

Sunny-side up at station

Come along and put some sparkle into Sunshine station by helping tidy up, plant and weed on August 21 from 1pm. Meet the clean-up team’s Butt it, Bin it mascot Barry, who will hand out portable ashtrays for smokers. Bring your own water. Meet at City Place outside Dragon Express Chinese.

Aged 50 or more, retired or semi-retired? Become a U3A Brimbank member and take advantage of low-cost classes and activities, including yoga, line dancing and ballroom dancing, computers, photoshop, Spanish, beginner’s French, Italian, English, movies, painting and drawing, crafts, cards, scrabble, book club, cooking, armchair travel. Workshops for business

Brimbank Community and Civic Centre will host the 2016 Victorian Small Business Festival – Marketing for Growth, August 9; Develop your Online Strategy workshop, August 16, and Building your Business Advantage workshop, August 24.
