Brimbank legend Basil Morcos talks to Neslim Djemal about his passion for community service.
How long have you been living in the area?
I came to Australia in 1971 from Egypt. I lived in East Keilor then moved to Keilor. In all, I’ve been here for almost 30 years. The community of Brimbank has great services that I use on a daily basis, and I believe it’s my duty to give back by dedicating my time to community service.
What organisations are you involved in?
At the moment I’m vice-president of Brimbank Central Rotary Club. I used to be president in 2004, and I’ve been a member of Rotary since 1981. I used to be a teacher at Altona North Technical School, where I taught humanities and social science to secondary school students for 21 years.
What do those roles involve?
I do a lot of work for members as I’m also chairman of the [Rotary] membership committee. I try to raise funds for the local and international communities. We work with schools, including Keilor Downs and Taylors Lakes secondary colleges, where we sponsor many students. My role at the Rotary club also includes raising funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Salvation Army.
How does it make you feel to help others?
I can’t even describe the level of happiness I feel when I help families or individuals. Knowing I’ve helped someone solve a problem makes me very happy. It’s a rewarding feeling that can’t be fully described.
What have been your major achievements?
I’ve been awarded seven community service awards for supporting the Deserted Children Association of Victoria. I’ve also been awarded a Centenary Medal as I used to be president of the Australian Egyptian Association. I received a bachelor of arts in Egypt and when I came to Australia in 1971 I completed two degrees at La Trobe University: a diploma of education and bachelor of education.
What are your goals?
I’ve retired now and would love to continue doing community service with Rotary, because it’s my hobby and I love it. We would like to increase membership so we’re encouraging hard-working people who are passionate about helping others to be a part of this rewarding and valuable association.
