A Sunshine councillor has thrown out a challenge to council’s caucus. Cr Howard Brown said he would not be ‘gagged’ by caucus and would continue to speak out. Cr Brown’s attack on caucus follows a recent direction to him not to make statements to the press. Council’s caucus recently decided that only the caucus secretary, Cr Ian Mill, was empowered to speak on behalf of the ALP councillors.

The fickle Bass Straits’ waters have sent many a good seaman’s dream to the ocean floor. Last Friday at 9.20am, Bill Leahy, an old salt from East Keilor, watched helplessly from a life-raft as his former Sydney Harbour ferry Karingal slid beneath the windswept, breaking swells of the strait. As the 32-metre ferry was being swallowed up, an eerie thing happened – without explanation its horn bellowed over the breakers.

Brimbank council will oppose demolition of housing for the elderly in Maidstone unless the Department of Planning and Development pays adequate compensation. It has been revealed that Sunshine’s elderly could wait for more than five years for public housing accommodation, following a proposal to demolish 108 flats at Gilda, Greenham and Coleham streets. They will be replaced with 25 to 30 single-storey units.

Developers and Brimbank councillors were faced with a barrage of questions last week as angry Albion residents vented their opposition to a proposed development in the area. A meeting last Wednesday night attended by councillors, residents and representatives of Track Consultants, working on behalf of developers Federation Village, almost boiled over.
