Ten thousand Greeks have threatened to lay siege to Sunshine town hall if their Greek representative is sacked. This follows a confidential report by social welfare director, Mrs Monica Bannikoff, which asked council to terminate the services of Mr George Anastassiou, a migrant services worker. The Greeks also approached several councillors to enlist their support to keep Mr Anastassiou.

About 200 Tottenham Technical School students boycotted classes in protest against the “unfair” treatment of a fellow student. At 1.30pm last Thursday, the students massed on the oval and refused to return to classes because Year 10C student Joe Scordo was detained and later suspended “for no good reason”. The suspension followed an incident last Tuesday involving some Year 10C students throwing paper aeroplanes.

Some sports clubs in the city of Brimbank might be forced off their grounds in a crackdown by the council on organisations that owe long-term debts. Twenty-four clubs owe the council almost $85,000 in overdue ground rental or loan repayments. Some of the debts go back more than two years. The largest debtor is the Keilor Sports club which owes $14,117.60. The council has warned the clubs they risk losing use of their grounds and facilities.

The spacious grounds of Sunshine RSL sub-branch were crowded with memories as members laid out rows of small crosses commemorating men and women who died for their country. More than 150 crosses stood in ranks on either side of the sub-branch cenotaph for Sunday’s memorial service ahead of Anzac Day next Monday. Many of the crosses were made by World War II veteran, now sub branch pensions officer Bill Clayton.
