40 years ago

April 2, 1975

A Melton councillor has bitterly attacked The Advocate story of the gastroenteritis epidemic raging through the township.

In an emotional outburst, Cr. Malcolm MacKay accused reporters of sensationalising facts and said there was no such thing as an epidemic in Melton.

He accused the paper of blowing the situation out of all proportion and at a later committee meeting was responsible for a demand that The Advocate substantiate its claims.

April 3, 1985

Sunshine Technical School teachers went on strike yesterday in protest at staff shortages.

Teachers are fed up with staff shortages and went on strike in the hope the Education Department would “sit up and take notice”.

Maria Bawden, of the Technical Teachers Union of Victoria, said the school had suffered staff shortages all term and it did not look as though things would improve.

“We started the term short of four teachers – two maths/science, art and a woodwork teacher,” she said.

Keilor has been identified as the best site for a new 200-bed hospital to service a greater western group of hospitals.

In a submission to the Metropolitan Hospitals Planning Board, the Royal Melbourne Hospital pushed for a new hospital at Keilor North or Broadmeadows.

Keilor is Royal Melbourne’s preferred site because it allows more opportunities to increase its services.

Car theft has dropped 35 per cent in Brimbank since the introduction of Operation Mobile, which led to 63 arrests.

Last month, Keilor Downs police arrested a man who had allegedly stolen the highest number of cars in Brimbank.

The 19-year-old St Albans man was charged with 100 counts of theft from a motor vehicle, 50 counts of stealing a vehicle, and 50 counts of being equipped to steal. He was released on bail to appear in Sunshine Magistrates Court next month.
