Health Department officials have cracked down on suppliers and retailers following a serious outbreak of contaminated food being sold in the district.

Local health surveyors said they were increasing inspections and samplings and had warned that contaminated food could lead to a major outbreak of disease and food poisoning. Sunshine council’s health department has been deluged with complaints about contaminated food.

Children in a suburban street in Sunshine, their parents, a local councillor and her family are in a battle over a triangle of land behind Sunshine library.

The land is currently being used as an unofficial playground by youngsters aged eight to 18.

At present they are playing cricket, but at different intervals football and tennis are also played.

January 18, 1995

The Sunshine and District Historical Society will oppose plans to demolish the only two remaining buildings on the former H.V. McKay Sunshine Harvester factory site to make way for a massive new retail-entertainment development.

A subsidiary of Woolworths, which bought two-thirds of the Harvester site from Sunshine council for $10 million in December, has lodged an application to demolish the buildings.

A last-minute decision to email her brother in Werribee on Boxing Day to tell him about her holiday in Thailand turned out to be a life-saving moment for a St Albans woman and her boyfriend. Minutes after interrupting their Phi Phi Island shopping plans to enter an internet cafe, Andrea van Arkel and Neil Ellis heard screaming in the street. Andrea suspected terrorists but looked up from her computer to see water – the tsunami – rushing through the door.
