October 30, 1974

Workers at the Nylex Corporation plant in Station Road, Deer Park, have been put on an emergency four-day week.

A serious liquidation problem caused by a slump in the automotive industry has forced an immediate 25 per cent cost cut.

Ten members of the Australian Metal Workers’ Union have been retrenched because the union refused to be a party to shorter working hours.

TAFE teachers have described the axing of a scheme to help disadvantaged unemployed youth in St Albans and Sunshine as a “cynical trick”.

Allan Ballagh and Mark McAuliffe were commenting on the termination of the six-year-old Access Education Program for Youth (AEPY), formerly known as the Education Program for Unemployed Youth. AEPY still survives in Melton, Werribee and Flemington.

People needing dental surgery or new dentures at the Sunshine clinic of the Royal Dental Hospital, located at the Western Hospital’s St Albans campus, face a wait of at least two years.

The clinic provides free dental treatment to low income and disadvantaged people in the west.

Last week, 4880 applications for fillings were on the clinic’s books.

The threat of a trade union black ban on the Sunshine Swim and Leisure Centre redevelopment has not gone away.

Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union official Daryl Spivey confirmed on Thursday the threatened ban was still in place. He said the union was ready to activate the pledge given by CFMEU leader Martin Kingham at a rally called by Sunshine pool campaigners last year at which they vowed to continue their campaign for more consultation.
