The idea of fast-tracking ‘high-achievers’ into the teaching profession to attract a better calibre of teachers has been raised again.
Not only has this idea been tried without too much success, it’s a slap in the face to thousands of dedicated educators who work incredibly hard only to have their abilities questioned and ridiculed.
How can anyone with a passion for teaching and with a masters in education not be the right calibre for our classrooms?
Most teachers work incredibly hard, often with one hand tied behind their back because of financial constraints.
They work long hours and in their own time preparing classes, marking and writing reports, and then have to deal with oafish parents who think their kids can do no wrong.
To attract and retain good teachers, we must improve conditions and treat them with respect.
