Bad smell? EPA investigates

Updated

The Environment Protection Authority received more than 200 odour complaints up to 8pm last night as a strong odour hung over the north west of Melbourne.

Reports began in Altona but spread as far as Tullamarine, Derrimut and Kealba, an EPA spokeswoman said.

“EPA officers were out on field last night to investigate matter and locate source of odour. EPA received more than 90 odour pollution reports… from about 8pm until midnight. Investigations continue today.”

A Caroline Springs resident told the Star Weekly of a “strong sulphur-like smell” from around 8pm last night.

The EPA is investigating the cause of an “odour plume” but Regional Services Executive Director Damian Wells said identifying the exact source could be difficult.

Residents can contact the EPA’s Pollution Hotline on 1300 372 842.
