November 19, 1975
Anti-Whitlam demonstrators have attacked Australian Labor Party campaign headquarters at St Albans. Windows have been smashed and paint splashed over walls and equipment. There have also been threats of bombings and widespread bloodshed as Sunshine’s three independent councillors called on police to close down the centre.

November 20, 1985
A bureaucratic blunder has left an elderly Maidstone woman a virtual prisoner in her own home. Frida Briggs, 79, has suffered from polio since she was three years old and is confined to a wheelchair. She used to guide her motorised chair down a ramp from her house and across an opposite driveway to get access to the street, until Sunshine council replaced the driveway with a concrete gutter.

A crackdown on heroin dealing at Cabramatta, Australia’s drug capital, is rapidly spreading the trade into Sunshine and St Albans, the western suburbs’ most senior police officer said last week. Chief Superintendent Brian Ritchie said police had evidence that Vietnamese drug cartels linked to Cabramatta in NSW were operating in the two suburbs.

He’s come a long way, Mark Viduka. The lad who grew up in St Albans and Keilor carrying a soccer ball everywhere was the toast of a nation as he captained the Socceroos last Wednesday to a spot in the World Cup.
