Third teen charged over fatal hit and run

UPDATE

A third teenager has been charged over a fatal hit and run involving an allegedly stolen car in Taylors Lakes on Saturday morning.

The Broadmeadows youth, 17, is being interviewed by police after handing himself in on Monday afternoon.

His arrest comes after two other northern suburbs teenagers, another 17 -year-old from Broadmeadows and a 17-year-old from Fawkner, were charged for their alleged involvement in the crash, which claimed the life of a young Gisborne man.

The pair were charged with culpable driving, fail to stop, fail to render assistance, burglary and theft of motor vehicle.

Both were remanded in custody and were expected to appear at a Children’s Court on Monday.

The three teenagers allegedly fled a black Audi after it allegedly sped through a red light and crashed into a white Toyota Corolla on the corner of Kings Road and Melton Highway around 1am.

The driver of the Corolla, a 25-year-old man from Gisborne, died at the scene.

“The Audi continued across the intersection and forced a motorcyclist, who was waiting to turn right from Kings Road onto the highway, to drop his bike and run,” Senior Constable Adam West said.

“The Audi hit the motorcycle and came to a stop.”

Senior Constable West said three men wearing balaclavas got out of the Audi and ran north on Kings Road.

They were chased by dog squad officers but managed to escape in a taxi.

Police were able to track the men to an address in Gladstone Park, which eventually led to the arrests.

Police have asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
