October 22, 1975

Monica Bannikoff, Sunshine’s $25,000-a- year director of welfare and education, has accused councillors of placing her on trial. She believes that because of recent clashes between herself and migrant extension worker George Anastassiou her reputation is being put under the microscope. And two members of the Labor caucus agree with her.

October 23, 1985

Tram travellers from Maribyrnong, Maidstone and Footscray have hit out at the Metropolitan Transit Authority’s proposal to shut down the Moonee Ponds No. 82 tram route. Under a proposal prepared by senior Met managers, the route will be closed and replaced by a bus service as part of the state government’s cost cutting scheme.

October 25, 1995

Paper “pirates” are scouring Brimbank in a race to get their hands on residents’ old newspapers and magazines before official recycling contractors get to them. In some cases, the pirates have stripped entire streets of newspapers and magazines left out for collection on nature strips. The contractors say their competitors have cut collections by nearly half at times and are threatening their livelihood and the future of the recycling operation.

October 25, 2005

Brimbank mayor Natalie Suleyman has been named for the first time as the person fellow councillor Sam Tabban allegedly attempted to bribe in his bid to win last year’s mayoral election. She is named by police in a second charge laid against Cr Tabban on October 5 but not publicly disclosed at the time.
