VU Secondary College conquers rugby codes

Victoria University Secondary College’s Rugby Academy continues to produce the goods with its senior boys’ team winning the Storm Cup last month to become state secondary school rugby league champions.

At the same time, at the end of term three, the intermediate team beat Braybrook in its grand final to win the Cooper Cronk Shield for its level in the state.

It capped off a massive few months for the college, its senior boys’ team having won the Victorian leg of the GIO Trophy against Hallam Secondary College in a tough encounter in June.

As well, the college’s senior boys’ team finished runner-up in the Rugby Boys National GIO Cup competition in Cootamundra in July, a series usually dominated by NSW teams.

Some academy students have gone on to bigger things with Tiui Misi representing rugby league club Melbourne Storm at under-18 level, Quidelis Dominic selected in rugby union’s Melbourne Rebels’ under-18 development squad, and rising Melbourne Storm winger Tony Tumusa making the New Zealand junior squad for a match on the Gold Coast.

Uala Salia was also selected for the combined affiliated state rugby league team in the Australian schoolboys championships in Wollongong in early July, playing against boys two years older than himself.
