Hair one minute, gone the next. At last Friday’s end-of-term assembly in front of the whole school, Ardeer Primary grade 6 pupil Nathan Evans shaved his brown locks down to a number one cut for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave.
The 11-year-old from Ardeer, who loves eating jelly and playing video games, said he decided to brave the severe trim after seeing an ad for the Greatest Shave.
He had already exceeded his fundraising target of $550 by pulling in $560 even before last week’s shave, thanks to an online campaign and some help from his mum and dad.
“My donation will help a regional family travel to a hospital in the city to get treatment,” he said.
His donation would also give a regional family a free place to stay for a week close to the hospital where their child is a patient.
Nathan is one of 150,000 Australians to shave or colour their hair this month to support blood cancer victims and fund research.
According to the Leukaemia Foundation, 31 Australians are diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a related blood disorder every day.
Ardeer Primary principal Graham Miller said it was great to see a student think about the needs of people outside the school community.
“I think it’s a great thing he’s initiated this all himself,” he said.
