A St Albans truck driver has walked away uninjured after crashing into an overpass in South Melbourne this morning.

The 39-year-old was travelling along Montague Street about 11.20am when he crashed into the tram overpass.

The overpass has a clearance of three metres and the truck measured at 3.5 metres.

The driver will be issue with an infringement notice for $758 for failing to obey low clearance sign.

Senior Constable Tim Fletcher said the driver was lucky not to suffer injury.

He said there had been several collisions at the overpass before.
