27 sites across Brimbank likely to be contaminated

Twenty seven sites across Brimbank have been identified as “high potential” contaminated sites including 15 existing petrol stations.

Brimbank council will apply a “potentially contaminated” Planning Scheme amendment on a yearly basis to potentially contaminated sites.

The sites include four motor repair workshops, an industrial warehouse, a telephone exchange, former petrol stations, the former Massey Ferguson Factory site and its waste disposal dam, possible future parkland and a former Powercor operations centre.

The sites are scattered around Brimbank, but the bulk of them are in Sunshine.

Contamination at petrol stations are usually caused by slow leakage from underground tanks which store petrol.

The amendment will apply an Environmental Audit Overlay where “potentially contaminating uses may have been taken place, or the land may be affected by contamination and sensitive uses are allowed”.

The EAO ensure an environmental audit is carried out at each site before the land is developed.

“Land and groundwater contamination needs to be managed to protect human health risk,” a council report found.

“Potentially contaminated land includes sites which may have chemical and metal concentrations that exceed acceptable levels.

“Soil and groundwater contamination in Brimbank has generally been caused by the management practices of past heavy industries, when environmental regulations were less onerous on polluting activities.”

Environmental audits test soil, groundwater and air quality.

Owner and occupiers of the land have been consulted.
