Lakers seek new coach

Caroline Springs is on the hunt for a new coach after Paul Growcott and the club agreed to part ways.

Growcott had been at the Lakers for three years, one as an assistant coach and two as head coach.

In that time he helped Caroline Springs remain in division 2 when the Western Region Football League introduced a third tier. He also led the Lakers to nine wins this season, the highest in the club’s senior history.

Caroline Springs football manager Marc Raak thanked Growcott for all he had done for the club.

“We had a discussion with Paul four weeks prior to the season ending,” Raak said.

“We listened to his thoughts and he listened to our thoughts and we said we’d have a review a couple of weeks after that. We were all on the same page that maybe we needed a fresh voice coming in.

“I have no doubt he will pick up a job somewhere if he wants to remain in football.

“We’re delighted in what he was able to do for our football club.”

The search for a replacement head coach has already begun and Raak said the club was excited by the early interest it had received.

The Lakers are open to a playing or non-playing coach but hope that whoever gets the job will be able to bring quality players with them.

“If we believe they can add value to our club, if they can bring players across, that will be a huge tick for them,” Raak said.

“We’re happy to sit down with them and go through it all. We are open to anything.”

It was a solid year for Caroline Springs which only just missed out on the division 1 finals.

But the Lakers lacked the forward line firepower against the league’s top sides to be able to take the next step.

Raak was adamant the club must make the finals next year.

“We have increased our win ratio every year for the past five years,” he said.

“But we wanted to play finals and, unfortunately, we finished a game short.

“We looked at a couple of opportunities from earlier in the year that probably cost us that finals berth.

“The club is really excited about playing next year and playing finals is a must.”

Anyone interested in applying for the head coaching role at Caroline Springs is encouraged to contact Marc Raak on 0438 114 322.
