man in court on doctor attack

A 48-year-old Sunshine North man has faced court charged with attempting to murder a neurosurgeon who was stabbed at Western Hospital in Footscray last Tuesday morning. Michael Wong was stabbed multiple times in the foyer of the hospital and was dragged to safety before being operated on by his colleagues. He was in a serious but stable condition. Kareem Al-Salami appeared briefly in Melbourne Magistrates Court last Tuesday afternoon charged with attempted murder, intentionally causing serious injury, and
recklessly causing serious injury. Defence lawyer Rainer Martini said Al-Salami’s first language was Arabic and he had limited English. But he was aware of the extent and seriousness of the charges, Mr Martini said. Magistrate Duncan Reynolds ordered that Al-Salami be remanded in custody until a committal mention on May 13.

action on cameras, lights

Brimbank council will continue with plans for CCTV cameras in Sunshine despite the federal government formally withdrawing funding last week. A council spokesman said: “We have recently completed works for the upgrade of Clarke Street in Sunshine town centre. Council and the Regional Rail Link Authority have been working together to install a portion of the CCTV in this area, despite the federal government funding withdrawal, and the council has installed all the proposed lighting.” Gellibrand MP Tim Watts urged residents to sign a petition asking for funding to be reinstated. “[In] Clarke Street, Sunshine needs improved lighting and CCTV cameras to address antisocial behaviour,” he said.

green light for hospital
St Albans will get a private hospital after Brimbank council approved a planning permit for a medical centre and day surgery. Plans include 302 car spaces. Fears were raised about overdevelopment at the site opposite Sunshine Hospital, the surgery’s hours of operation and its proximity to homes.

charge over naked body

Homicide detectives have charged a man with the murder of an 18-year-old man whose naked body was found dumped outside Sunshine Hospital in May last year. A security guard found the body of Hieu Nguyen, of
St Albans, on the nature strip in front of the hospital. Nathaniel Raimundo, 25, of Taylors Lakes was arrested last Thursday and charged with one count of murder. He will face a committal mention on June 26.
