Theft of tap-and-go cards underlies a 12 per cent rise in credit card fraud in the past month, Brimbank police say.
Sergeant Isaac Papadopoulos said train stations had become a haven for thieves, who took wallets from unlocked cars and stole credit cards.
“A person had $2000 spent on a card recently after it was stolen at Sydenham and another thief spent $800 with a stolen tap-and-go card,” he said.
Sergeant Papadopoulos said this type of fraud was rising steadily.
“The public should remove belongings from their vehicles, as thieves are targeting them because of items observed through the window,” he said.
