Law to prevent ‘another Brimbank’ – Bernie Finn

LOCAL GOVERNMENT

Sunshine-based upper house MP Bernie Finn has told State Parliament a new local government law would end the ‘‘corruption and dictatorship’’ that marked the former Brimbank council.

Speaking earlier this month in support of the Local Government Performance Reporting and Accountability Bill, Mr Finn (pictured) took aim at the “dastardly” council dismissed in 2008 and at former mayor Natalie Suleyman.

“One would hope this bill will go a long way towards ensuring that we never have another Brimbank,” he said.

Mr Finn said it was “disgraceful” and an insult to the community that Ms Suleyman was Labor candidate for St Albans.

Ms Suleyman did not respond to calls, but in an earlier interview she refused to speculate what the community would make of her appointment as the ALP candidate.

“It [the issues of the past] has been dealt with,” she said. “It’s history now. I want to deal with the real issues facing St Albans.” BC
