The Napthine government will examine laws being introduced in NSW to stamp out the culture of ”coward punches” for Victoria.
On Tuesday, NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell announced a raft of new laws, including a 1.30am lockout in Sydney pubs and clubs and mandatory minimum sentences for a range of offences involving alcohol and drugs. The changes include mandatory minimum sentences of eight years in jail for fatal one-punch attacks involving alcohol and drugs.
The Victorian government said it had already taken significant steps to combat alcohol-fuelled violence. ”The community is rightly appalled by the serious injuries and deaths that so often result from ‘coward punches’ and similar attacks,” a government spokesman said.
”The government will examine the new laws proposed for introduction in New South Wales and consider whether further measures should be introduced in Victoria.”
