A giant crack on the West Gate bridge is not a structural problem and is a likely to be a result of last week’s heatwave, Vicroads says.
The crack closed two inbound lanes on the bridge near Williamstown Road about 1.15pm on Monday.
VicRoads spokesman Peter Todd said the crack was ‘‘purely cosmetic’’, and most likely the result of last week’s extreme heatwave.
No structural damage has occurred, he said.
Mr Todd said the two lanes were closed while VicRoads crews performed a temporary fix. VicRoads expects all lanes to be open by Tuesday morning.
The speed limit has been reduced to 40kmh.
VicRoads crews were on scene and were looking at the crack.
